App design for Kiddolini

Kiddolini – A Swap & Sell App for Families

A mobile app that helps families easily swap, sell, or donate children’s items.

Role: Research Lead & UX/UI Designer

Team : Veronika Haugland
Timeline:  September - November 2024

Statement & Objectives

The Problem
Families are short on time and often end up with piles of outgrown clothes, toys, and gear. Traditional buy/sell apps aren’t built for swapping, making the process time-consuming and complicated.

Goal
Create a simple and trustworthy solution where families can swap, sell, or donate in one seamless flow.

Research

We surveyed 48 parents (ages 25–40) with experience buying and swapping children’s items, to understand their needs, frustrations, and expectations around second-hand shopping for kids.

We also ran a competitive analysis of four main competitors to identify gaps in the market. This revealed recurring pain points – later visualized – that informed our opportunities for Kiddolini.

Insights

We synthesized our research into key themes, which directly shaped the app.

Trust is essential →

Verified reviews & item condition visible

Category-based browsing & filtering

Clothes dominate →

Easy search matters →

Intuitive search & filter flow

Flexibility is key →

Swap, sell, or donate in one seamless flow

Wireframing & IA

I mapped out the app’s information architecture to clarify content hierarchy and key user flows for swapping, selling, and donating items.

Low-fidelity wireframes were then created to test the flows with a small group of users.
Feedback from each round refined the design, ensuring an intuitive and visually cohesive final prototype.

Key Flows & UX Highlights

Key flows were created to ensure a smooth, safe, and enjoyable experience, with intuitive search, filtering, verified listings, easy uploads, and guided donation flows.

Testing

Our tests on 8 people highlighted the importance of ease of use, visual appeal, and location-based features, confirming the app meets busy parents’ needs.

Based on user-tested flows, we refined the interface to be clearer, more accessible, and easier to navigate. Key improvements included a smoother donations flow, improved search filters, organized messaging, and accessibility features like high-contrast modes and larger touch targets.

These refinements created a more intuitive, inclusive, and trustworthy app that makes exchanging, selling, and donating children’s items simple and enjoyable for busy parents.

Solution & Design Enhancements

Summary

Kiddolini makes exchanging, selling, and donating children’s items simple and enjoyable, saving busy parents time while supporting a circular, sustainable community.

Builds community – connects families through sharing

Supports donations – easy options for giving items away

Promotes sustainability – extends the life of children’s goods

Reflections & Future Steps

Working on Kiddolini taught me the value of testing early with users and iterating based on feedback. I also learned that close, live collaboration with the product owner is key to aligned, efficient decision-making.

Future iterations could explore location-based matching, personalized recommendations, and additional donation options to further simplify exchanges and strengthen the community.
